Junior tallies goal, assist

game-winning goal and dished out an assist on Thursday night at
American International.

HOLYOKE, Mass. (September 18,
2008) – Junior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham,
Mass./Bellingham) scored the game-winning goal and added an
assist on Thursday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University
field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over American International in
Northeast-10 Conference play at Holyoke High School. Freshman
goalkeeper Kim Steiner (Redford, N.Y./Little Falls) made 10 saves
for AIC in defeat.
The game went scoreless for over 20 minutes before Franklin Pierce
found the contest's first goal with 11:28 to play in the
first half. Sophomore forward Emily Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin
Regional) scored her second goal of the season off a feed
from Abernethy.
The first half was played fairly even, with each team attempting
five shots in the opening stanza.
The Ravens found the back of the cage again just 1:50 into the
second half to increase the lead to 2-0. Abernethy netted an
unassisted tally which was her third goal of the season and would
eventually be the game-winning goal. AIC would cut the lead in half
with 4:57 to play. Freshman Amanda McLean (Branford,
Conn./Branford) scored off an assist from Rhonwen Peters
(Aquashicola, Pa./Palmerton) to create the 2-1 final.
Franklin Pierce controlled play through much of the second half
and racked up a 16-4 shots advantage, which game the Ravens a 21-9
edge over the full 70 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin
Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made six saves in
front of the Franklin Pierce cage to earn the victory. Steiner
turned aside 10 shots for AIC in defeat.
The Ravens (3-4, 3-3 NE-10) return to the field on Sunday, Sept.
20 when they travel to take on Stonehill in a Northeast-10
Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at W.B.
Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass. Franklin Pierce's next home
game is Saturday, Sept. 27 against Massachusetts Lowell at 1 p.m.
American International (1-7, 1-5 NE-10) returns to action on Sept.
20 at Merrimack.
