ORLANDO, Fla. (March 18,
2008) – Freshman Lauren Stille (North
Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) scored seven times and added
an assist for eight points as Franklin Pierce University defeated
Southern Connecticut State University, 15-10, in a non-conference
women's lacrosse matchup at the Disney Complex on Tuesday
afternoon.
Stille's seven goals and eight points are both tied for
fifth-best in a single game at Franklin Pierce, with her goal total
the most by a Raven player since Courtney Boardman '05 had
eight tallies against Regis College on April 9, 2005.
Junior captain Carla Savini (Danvers,
Mass./Danvers) also had a good day for the Ravens with
five goals, including the game-winning tally on a free-position
shot midway through the second half. Freshman Jordan
Baillargeon (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) scored twice for
her first two collegiate goals, while junior May Stoffer
(New Hartford, Conn./Watkinson) added one for Franklin
Pierce.
Sophomore Teresa Manfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) led the
Owls with three goals, while junior Grace Martha (Cheshire,
Conn./Cheshire) and freshman Jessica Kraszewski (West Haven,
Conn./West Haven) each had a pair of goals for Southern
Connecticut.
Freshman goaltender Chaniece Franklyn (Chappaqua,
N.Y./Horace Greeley) earned her first collegiate victory
for Franklin Pierce by turning away 13 of 23 shot attempts, while
Southern Connecticut's Lisa Corso (North Bellmore,
N.Y./Wellington C. Mepham) allowed 15 goals on 29 shots on goal.
The Ravens outshot the Owls by 10 on the day, 40-30, and put 29
shots on goal to the Owls' 23.
The first half was evenly played, as neither team could gain more
than a two-goal advantage. Stille (four) and Savini (two) combined
for all the Raven offense in the opening 30 minutes of play, as the
teams went into intermission deadlocked at six-all.
After ceding the first two goals of the second half to give the
Owls an 8-6 edge 5:01 into the period, Franklin Pierce came back
strong by scoring the game's next eight goals to take a
commanding 14-8 lead. Stille began the streak 6:29 into the second
half, taking a pass from senior captain Celine Stamets
(Sausalito, Calif./Mavin Catholic) and beating Corso for
her fifth of the day. Savini scored three times in 3:59 during the
run, including the eventual game-winner with 8:42 left in the half.
Stoffer capped the game-changing streak with her second of the year
with 4:33 left.
Franklin Pierce (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) concludes its Spring Break trip
tomorrow with a non-varsity contest against New York University at
5 p.m. The Ravens return to varsity play on Tuesday, March 25 at 4
p.m. with the team's Northeast-10 Conference opener at
Southern New Hampshire University. Southern Connecticut (0-4, 0-1
