Fleury's 104th minute goal gives River Hawks first ever win
series history
Boxscore
RINDGE,
N.H. (October 7, 2008) - Freshman Erin Fleury's
(Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) goal in the
104th minute lifted the University of Massachusetts
Lowell to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Franklin Pierce
University, ranked 15th in this week's National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, in
Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Sodexo Field this
evening.
Fleury's goal gives UMass Lowell its
first ever win in 16 meetings between the two programs since the
series started in 1995. Franklin Pierce now holds a 13-1-2
advantage in the all-time series, after the two meetings leading up
to tonight's match finished as 1-1 draws. Fleury took a cross from
the right flank by junior Jenna McIntosh (Johnstown,
N.Y./Johnstown), settled the ball just inside the 18 on
the left channel and launched a bending ball into the upper left
hand corner of the net 3:41 into the second overtime period.
Junior goalkeeper Jamie
Gillis (North Billerica, Mass./Billerica) made five saves
to preserve her Northeast-10 leading fifth shutout of the season
for UMass Lowell. Senior Brittany Ester (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River East) finished with three stops for
Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce posted a 12-5
advantage in shots for the match and had a handful of other scoring
opportunities in which they failed to pull the trigger from
dangerous positions. The Ravens out-shot UMass Lowell 9-3 after
halftime, including 3-1 in the nearly 14 extra minutes, but the
River Hawks converted on their lone shot of extra time.
Franklin Pierce appeared to pull out
a late winner in regulation as junior All-American Gabriela
Demoner (Curitiba, Brazil) tapped in a loose ball inside
the six off a header by sophomore All-American Angelika
Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) in the 89th
minute, only to see the far side lineman raise his flag for
offside. Gillis smothered a close-range shot from Johansson in the
84th minute and a UML defender blocked a dangerous
attempt from freshman Amanda Panaro (Rockland,
Mass./Rockland) in the 88th.
Franklin Pierce (7-3-1, 5-2-1 NE-10)
returns to action on Sunday, when it visits Assumption College for
a Conference match up at 1 p.m. The Ravens return home on Wednesday
to host Southern New Hampshire University at 4 p.m. UMass Lowell
(6-3-3, 5-2-3 NE-10) travels to The College of Saint Rose on
Saturday at 1 p.m.
