Demoner nets two
second-half goals to break match open
COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 5, 2007) – Franklin
Pierce University, ranked No. 5 in this week's National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II
coaches' poll, collected a 5-1 victory over Saint
Michael's College, ranked second in the New England Region,
in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Duffy
Field this afternoon.
Senior All-American Gabriela Demoner (Curitiba,
Brazil) netted two goals, while classmates Taryn
Welker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Jenna Giardina
(Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) each dished two assists for
Franklin Pierce.
Sophomore All-American Shona Franklin (Leicester,
England) opened the scoring for Franklin Pierce just 5:56
into the match, assisted by Welker, netting her first goal of the
season. Welker set up the Ravens second marker of the half, feeding
sophomore Mackenzie Bulych (Regina, Saskatchewan)
at 14:59.
Saint Michael's cut its deficit in half just 10:06 into the
second stanza on freshman Jenn Senecal's (Yarmouth,
Maine/Yarmouth) first collegiate goal, assisted by junior Sheila
Catanzarita (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy).
Franklin Pierce answered with three goals in a 16-minute span
midway through the second half to break the match wide open.
Giardina set up Demoner for back-to-back goals in the 62nd and 70th
minutes, before junior Ann Foley (Foxboro,
Mass./Rockland) rounded out the scoring in the 78th
minute, assisted by freshman Angelika Johansson
(Falkenberg, Sweden).
Senior goalkeeper Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) finished with
eight saves for Saint Michael's, while junior
Brittany Ester (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East)
notched one save for Franklin Pierce who out-shot the hosts 22-2
for the match.
Franklin Pierce (3-0-1, 1-0-1 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday
when it visits Bryant University, ranked fifth in the New England
region, at 7 p.m. The Ravens return home on Tuesday, September 11,
to host Assumption College at 7 p.m. Saint Michael's (2-1-1,
0-1-1 NE-10) travels to Merrimack College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
