Keith Renaud leads Ravens with arm and bat to 5-0 win in game
one; Cawley's walk off RBI double lifts Setters to 2-1 victory in
nightcap
RINDGE, N.H. (April 19,
2007) - Franklin Pierce, ranked ninth in this week's
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division
II poll and 15th in the Collegiate Baseball
magazine poll, split a Northeast-10 Conference baseball
doubleheader with Pace University at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas
Field this afternoon. The Ravens posted a 5-0 victory in game one,
before the Setters earned the split with a 2-1 decision in the
nightcap.
Junior Keith Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) hit a combined 6-for-8 in
the doubleheader for Franklin Pierce with a double, stolen base and
three runs scored and also picked up his fifth win on the mound
with 7.2 scoreless innings in game one.
Junior Jack Cawley (Bronx,
N.Y./Iona Prep) was a combined 3-for-7 at the plate for
Pace and drove in the winning run with a walk off double in the
nightcap. The Setters were the home team in a makeup of Tuesday's
rained out game scheduled for Pleasantville, N.Y.

Keith Renaud led Franklin Pierce both on the mound and at
the plate for a 5-0 victory in game one. Renaud scattered three
hits over 7.2 scoreless innings on the mound, striking out a
season-high matching 12 while walking two for his team-leading
fifth win of the season (5-0). At the plate, Renaud was 3-for-4
with a double, stolen base and three runs
scored.
Freshman Kevin Rivers
(Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) was 2-for-4 for the
Ravens with a double and two RBI, while junior Kevin Renaud
(Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) finished 1-2 with an RBI
and run scored.
Jack Cawley and junior Joe
Barracato (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) were both 1-for-3 at the
plate for Pace, while Barracato also collected a stolen base.
Junior Dustin Corbett
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) took the loss (4-4) on the mound for
the Setters, yielding four earned runs on six hits with five
strikeouts and no walks over seven innings.
Franklin Pierce jumped on top with
a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Vinny
Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) singled through the
left side to lead off the frame, followed by a double the right by
Keith Renaud. Pennell scored on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Renaud,
before Keith Renaud scored on a Matt Anderson (Medford,
Mass./Medford) groundout.
Franklin Pierce doubled its lead in
the sixth with a two-run single from Rivers with one out through
the right side of a drawn-in Pace infield. The Ravens rounded out
the scoring with an unearned run in the eighth. Keith Renaud
reached with an infield single and later scored from second on an
errant Pace throw while trying to complete an inning-ending
double-play.

Jack Cawley laced a walk off RBI double to the gap in left
center with two outs to lift Pace to a 2-1 victory in the nightcap,
handing Franklin Pierce its first home loss of the year (12-1).
Franklin Pierce reliever
Clay Jenkins (Easton, N.H./Profile) struck out the
first two Pace batters of the ninth looking, but sophomore
Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) doubled
to right center to spark the Setters rally. Jenkins hit senior
Ray Caronia (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) with his next
pitch before Cawley drilled an 0-1 offering to left center to
easily score Liscinsky with the deciding
run.
Cawley finished 2-for-4 in the
contest with the double, a stolen base and RBI. Junior Matt
Arburr (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) hit 3-4 with a
stolen base and run scored, while freshman Aaron Zrenda
(Niantic, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) was 2-3 with an RBI.
Liscinsky batted 2-4 with a double and run scored.
Sophomore Zach Dayton
(North Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) entered the game in the
fourth and held Franklin Pierce to just two hits (both singles) in
5.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out six and walking none
for his second win of the season (2-1). Sophomore starter
Nicholas DeMeo (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East)
allowed the one earned run on four hits and two walks with two
strikeouts over the first 3.2 innings.
Keith Renaud was again 3-for-4 at
the plate for Franklin Pierce, while Kevin Rivers scored the Ravens
lone run and walked twice.
Sophomore Mike Adams
(Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) turned in another 6.1
strong innings on the mound for the Ravens, surrendering just one
earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Jenkins,
who retired all four batters he faced with two strikeouts in game
one, suffered the loss (2-1) in the nightcap, yielding an earned
run on two hits with two strikeouts in two thirds of an inning.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring
in the second inning. Rivers drew a leadoff walk, advanced to
second on a wild pitch and scored when senior Jake
Christman (Newton, Mass./Newton South) reached when Arburr
couldn't hold on to the ball at first.
Pace evened the score in the fourth
as Arburr singled through the left side with one out, stole second,
and scored with Zrenda's single to right center. Franklin Pierce
had threatened in the top of the inning, loading the based with one
out off DeMeo, but Dayton entered and got a strikeout and pop out
from the bottom of the Ravens order to escape the jam. Franklin
Pierce didn't put a runner in scoring position the rest of the way.

returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Southern New
Hampshire University in the "Inaugural Night Game" at Dr. Pappas
Field at 7 p.m. Admission to the event is free and the first 1,000
fans entering the "admission tent" located under the Dr. Pappas
Field arch will receive a commemorative ticket stub for the night.
The first 100 fans entering the archway will also receive a free
t-shirt. The tent will open at 6 p.m. Franklin Pierce will offer
complimentary coffee and hot chocolate from the concession stand
located on the first floor of the press box. Atlas
Pyrotechnics, of Jaffrey, has donated a fireworks display
following the game.
Pace (19-18, 12-6 NE-10) visits
Dowling College for a non-conference contest tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
