Golden Knights hand Ravens worst
regular season defeat in 17 years
ALBANY, N.Y. (August 31,
2006) - The College of Saint Rose opened its 2006 season
with a stunning 4-0 victory over Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 3 in
the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II preseason coaches poll, in Northeast-10 Conference
women's soccer action at The Albany Academy for Girls this
afternoon.
Saint Rose, which raced out to a
3-0 halftime advantage, handed Franklin Pierce its worst regular
season defeat since a 5-0 setback to Plymouth State College on
September 26, 1989. The Ravens last dropped a 4-0 decision to
eventual National Champion Lynn University in an NCAA semifinal
match on December 4, 1998. Franklin Pierce last yielded four goals
in a match when Christian Brothers University handed the Ravens a
4-1 loss in an NCAA Tournament semifinal on November 30, 2001.
Junior Lauren Steinberg
(Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) made two saves to
preserve the shutout - the first against Franklin Pierce since a
2-0 setback to Kennesaw State University in the 2003 NCAA Division
II Championship match on December 6, 2003 (snapping a streak of 46
matches with at least a goal).
Saint Rose, which out-shot Franklin
Pierce, 12-5, opened the scoring when sophomore Kailey
Egbert (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) converted a penalty kick
just 8:19 into the match. The penalty was awarded when sophomore
Deanna Wachtel (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) was
tripped up in the penalty area.
The Golden Knights added a second
in the 18th minute as junior Lindsay Bove
(Holliston, Mass./Holliston) headed in a rebound after the
initial shot from senior Kylee Litchfield (North Granby,
Conn./Granby Memorial) caromed off the crossbar. Saint
Rose rounded out the first half onslaught when Wachtel headed in a
corner kick from senior Alexandra LaFite (Greenbrae,
Calif./Redwood) that was deflected across the goalmouth by
freshman Jordan Bowers (Colorado Springs,
Colo./Doherty) in the 33rd minute.
Saint Rose rounded out the scoring
with just 2:41 to play when junior Ashley McGuire
(Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) banged in a free kick from
20-yards.
Junior Jenna Mello
(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) finished with three saves
for Franklin Pierce.
