Golden Knights turn 20 Ravens
turnovers into 34 points to key victory
ALBANY, N.Y. (December 9,
2006) - The College of Saint Rose, among team's receiving
votes in this week's NABC Division II poll, got nearly half its
point off turnovers to key a 70-61 victory over Franklin Pierce in
Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Daniel P. Nolan
Gymnasium this afternoon.
Saint Rose scored 34 of its 70
points off 20 Franklin Pierce turnovers and also outscored the
Ravens 13-6 on second-chance points to offset a 38.9-percent
(21-54) shooting effort from the field, including 34.6% (9-26) in
the second half. The Ravens shot slightly better at 42.3% (22-52),
including 40% (12-30) over the final 20 minutes.
Junior Steve Dagostino
(Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) led all scorers with 23
points, aided by 10-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line, to go
with four assists. Classmate Will Monica (Great Falls,
Va./Langley) added 15 points, four rebounds and four
assists, while senior Mike DePaoli (North Salem, N.Y./North
Salem) registered 13 points, shooting 3-of-5 from the
field, including 3-4 from three-point range, and converting all
four free-throw attempts, to go with three steals. Senior
Clayton Longmire (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili)
chipped in a team-best eight
rebounds.
Senior Darryl Minnifield
(Boston, Mass./Brookline) led Franklin Pierce with 14
points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Timothy
Munch (Blauvelt, N.Y./Storm King Prep) added 12 points,
six rebounds (three offensive) and two steals, while senior
Sean Mayo (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) chipped
in ten points and six rebounds (four offensive). Freshman
Marcus Wellman (Monroe, Conn./Hamden Hall)
contributed a team-best eight boards.
Three-pointers by Minnifield and
Munch gave Franklin Pierce a 6-0 lead just under three-minutes into
the contest, but Saint Rose answered the call with a 19-3 tear to
open a ten-point cushion (19-9) after a Monica layup midway through
the stanza. A Mayo layup brought the Ravens back within a point
(26-25) with 3:55 left in the stanza and the teams were separated
by just four (32-28) at the intermission.
Seven-straight Saint Rose points,
capped by a Dagostino three-pointer, put the hosts back up ten
(50-40) with 11:58 to play. Trailing by 12 (58-46) with 7:17 left
in regulation, Franklin Pierce used an 11-0 run to close within a
point (58-57) after a Nazim Senaldi (Istanbul,
Turkey) layup with 2:22 to play. Senaldi netted four
points during the run in all. However, the Golden Knights drained
10-of-12 free-throw attempts, including a 6-6 effort from
Dagostino, to seal the victory.
Franklin Pierce (5-4, 3-3 NE-10)
returns home on Wednesday when it hosts instate rivals Southern New
Hampshire University at 7:30 p.m. Saint Rose (7-2, 5-1 NE-10)
