Wellman leads five Ravens in double-figures with season-high 17
points
RINDGE, N.H. (November 27,
2006) - Franklin Pierce took charge from the start and
cruised to an 87-61 victory over The College of Saint Joseph's in
non-conference men's basketball action at the Fieldhouse tonight.
Two Franklin Pierce players notched
double-doubles and two others threatened the plateau as the Ravens
won the battle of the boards 54-42 and hit 45.8-percent (33-72) of
their shots from the field, including 11 three-pointers (on 33
attempts). Saint Joseph's in contrast shot just 32.4-percent
(23-71) from the field, including a 28.6% (10-35) performance in
the first
half.
Freshman Marcus Wellman
(Monroe, Conn./Hamden Hall) led five Ravens in
double-figures with a season-high 17 points, hitting 6-of-8 from
the field (5-7 three's), to go with five assists and two steals.
Senior Sean Mayo (Saco,
Maine/Thornton Academy) collected his fourth-straight
double-double, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks
and three assists. Sophomore Timothy Munch (Blauvelt,
N.Y./Storm King Prep) posted his first career
double-double with ten points and a career-best ten rebounds to go
with four assists and two steals. Senior Darryl Minnifield
(Boston, Mass./Brookline) added 12 points, nine boards and
four blocks, while classmate Ric Noel (Montreal,
Quebec/Dawson College) chipped in a career-high ten points
and eight rebounds (three offensive) with two steals.
Freshman Tyler Herrington
(Cambridge, N.Y.) posted a double-double for Saint
Joseph's with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds (six offensive)
to go with three assists. Junior Richard
Ortega (Manhattan, N.Y.) netted a game-high 19
points to go with eight rebounds, while classmate Ruben
Brown (Miami, Fla.) chipped in seven points and three
steals.
Franklin Pierce never trailed and
used an 18-5 run to open a 21-point cushion (38-17) after a Munch
jumper with 5:18 left in the first half. The Ravens led by as much
as 23 in the opening half, but settled for a 17-point lead at the
break as the Saint closed the stanza with five-straight points.
Saint Joseph's was within 13
(47-34) after a Ryan Kimball (Monkton, Vt.) jumper
3:42 into the second half, but Franklin Pierce responded with a
19-4 run to open a 28-point bulge (66-38) after a Noel free-throw
midway through the half and were never threatened the rest of the
way.
Franklin Pierce (3-2, 1-1 NE-10)
returns to NE-10 play on Wednesday when it visits Pace University
at 7:30 p.m. Saint Joseph's (2-4, 0-0 SAC) participates in the
Skidmore Invitational this weekend.
