New Haven Hands Franklin Pierce Defeat, 73-59

Chargers out-score Ravens in second half after trailing at halftime

COLCHESTER, Vt. (November 18, 2006) - The University of New Haven defeated Franklin Pierce, 73-59, in day two action of the Doubletree Hotels Doc Jacobs Classic, hosted by Saint Michael's College, at Ross Sports Center this afternoon.

New Haven held Franklin Pierce to just 25.9-percent (7-of-27) shooting in the second half, including 0-11 from three-point range to turn a one-point halftime deficit (35-34) into a 14-point win. The Chargers also out-rebounded the Ravens 41-29.

Freshman Cassius Chaney (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) led four New Haven players in double-figures with 20 points, on 8-of-15 shooting off the bench, and nine rebounds. Junior Carl Campbell (Landover, Md./Cecil CC) added 17 points, while classmate Tetrick Stonar (Hartford, Conn.) netted 16 points. Freshman Darryl Greene (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Sophomore Timothy Munch (Blauvelt, N.Y./Storm King Prep) led Franklin Pierce with a season-high 20 points, hitting 9-of-18 from the field, three rebounds and two blocks. Senior captain Sean Mayo (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) collected his first double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds (five offensive) to go with four blocks. Senior Nazim Senaldi (Istanbul, Turkey) contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three steals off the bench.

Franklin Pierce led by as much as seven (27-20) in the first half after a Munch layup with 9:20 to play in the stanza, but settled for a one-point edge (35-34) at the break. New Haven quickly took its first lead of the second half after a pair of Campbell free throws 43-seconds in, but the Ravens regained the lead (41-40) after a Darryl Minnifield (Boston, Mass./Brookline) jumper with 14:57 to play.

The lead went back and forth until New Haven used an 11-0 run to open a ten-point lead (56-46) with 7:04 left. Chaney sparked the run with six of the Chargers 11 points. Franklin Pierce closed within six (56-50) after a Senaldi jumper with 5:07 on the clock, but that would be as close as the Ravens would get the rest of the way.

Franklin Pierce (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Tuesday at Assumption College at 7:30 p.m. New Haven (1-1, 0-0 ECC) faces host Saint Michael's College tomorrow at 3 p.m.
