WALTHAM, Mass. (October 7, 2006)
– The Franklin Pierce field hockey team suffered a tough 2-1
setback to Bentley College, ranked No. 3 in this week's
National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. The Falcons
posted two first half goals and held off a late Raven attack to
earn their conference leading, ninth victory of the season.
Bentley opened the scoring midway through the first half as senior
All-America Mary Rogers (Watertown, Mass./ Watertown) netted her
eighth goal of the season to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later classmate Lindsey Harrington (Atkinson,
N.H./Timberlane Regional) added her ninth goal of the season to
increase the Falcon lead to 2-0.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Franklin Pierce
fired back midway through the second frame as sophomore Trish Slowinski (Colrain, Mass./Mohawk
Regional) registered her third goal of the season off an
assist from freshman Lea Brandano (Kensington, N.H./Exeter).
Franklin Pierce had an opportunity to even the score down the
stretch, but two saves by Bentley goalkeeper, freshman Alyssa
Sliney (Brewster, Mass./Nauset Regional) preserved the win for the
Falcons. Raven goalkeeper, senior
e= "font-weight: bold;">Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn./The
Morgan School) made 12 saves despite the loss.
Franklin Pierce (3-7, 3-6 NE-10) will be in action again on
Tuesday as it travels to No. 8 ranked Saint Michael's College
at 3:30 p.m. Bentley College (9-3, 7-2 NE-10) will host Bryant
University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
