RINDGE, N.H. (October 28, 2006) –
The Franklin Pierce field hockey team suffered a tough 1-0 setback
to Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference
action this afternoon at Jess Dowd Field. Junior Angela Cafarelli
(Enfield, Conn./Enfield) registered the game-winning goal with just
5:47 remaining in regulation to give the Owls their fifth victory
of the season.
After a silent first half for both teams, Southern Connecticut
rallied with less than six minutes to go in the game as Cafarelli
tipped in an Owl penalty corner off assists from senior Rachel
Ragusa (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) and junior Kate Gedney (Westbrook,
Conn./Westbrook).
Franklin Pierce had several scoring opportunities late in the
second half but could not capitalize as Southern Connecticut senior
goalkeeper Casey Sanford (North Haven, Conn./North Haven)
registered five saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
Franklin Pierce senior goalkeeper Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan
School) stopped three shots despite the loss.
Franklin Pierce finishes the regular season with an overall record
of 6-12 and a 6-10 mark in the Northeast-10. Southern Connecticut
State University concludes its season with an overall record of
5-14, 5-11 in the NE-10.
