Ravens net two second-half goals,
will host Stonehill in NE-10 quarterfinal Tuesday
RINDGE, N.H. (October 21,
2006) - Franklin Pierce, ranked 11th in this
week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, netted two second half goals in
posting a 2-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University in
Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Jess Dow Field
this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce (14-2, 12-2 NE-10)
opens defense of its six-straight Northeast-10 Tournament titles on
Tuesday when the second-seeded Ravens host seventh-seeded Stonehill
College (6-5-4, 5-5-4 NE-10) in quarterfinal round action at 4 p.m.
Southern Connecticut State rounds out its season with a record of
5-9-3 overall, 2-9-3 in the NE-10.
The match was scoreless until
freshman Shona Franklin (Leicester, England)
scored with a long shot from the left side 4:13 into the second
half. The Ravens got a late insurance marker from junior
Leanne Bowler (Clonalvy, Ireland), off an assist
by classmate Gabriela Demoner (Curitiba, Brazil),
in the 87th minute.
Junior Jenna
Mello (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) made four
saves (three first half) to preserve her seventh shutout of the
season (22nd career). Senior goalkeeper
Stephanie McGinley (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck)
finished with five saves (four first half) for Southern
Connecticut.
Franklin Pierce finished with an
11-7 advantage in shots for the match.
