Ravens come back to win game one, 5-4, River Hawks handle
Ravens in nightcap, 8-1
LOWELL, Mass. (May 1, 2005)
- Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's
Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, split a
Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with the University
of Massachusetts Lowell at LeLacheur Park this afternoon. Franklin
Pierce came back to post a 5-4 victory in game one, but UMass
Lowell collected an 8-1 decision in the nightcap.
Franklin Pierce rallied from a 4-1
deficit, capping the rally with three runs in the seventh as the
Ravens go-ahead run scored on a delayed steal by sophomore
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills). Olson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two
runs scored, while junior Elliott Shea (Jaffrey,
N.H./Conant) returned to the lineup after missing
four games due to injury and was 2-4 with a double and RBI. Junior
Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) hit 1-3 with an
RBI.
Junior Mike Farrell
(Russell, Mass./Gateway Regional) earned the win
(1-0) with 4.2 innings of solid relief, allowing just an earned run
while scattering five hits with a strikeout and no walks. Sophomore
Matt Fisher (Athol, Mass./Athol) picked
up his program-record fourth save of the season by retiring three
of the four batters he faced in the ninth. Starter
Daniel Fournier (Worcester, Mass./Holy
Name) surrendered three runs, just one earned, on
five hits and five walks with six strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Junior Shamus Veo
(Hudson, Mass./Hudson) led the River Hawks offense,
which out-hit the Ravens 11-6 in the game, as he was 3-for-4 with a
run scored. Senior Miles Page (Dracut, Mass./Central
Catholic) was 2-4 with two runs scored, while
freshman Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass./Joseph
Case) hit 2-5 with a pair of stolen bases.
Sophomore Ron Nelson
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) suffered his first
loss of the season (2-1), allowing an unearned run on a hit with
four strikeouts over an inning and two thirds. River Hawks freshman
Joe Malzone (Leominster,
Mass./Leominster) allowed four runs, three earned, on
five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 6.1
innings.
In the Ravens seventh, Olson drove
in the first run with a single through the left side with one out.
Shea reached on an error, which allowed junior Mike
Feetham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) to score the
tying run. After a strikeout, Olson stole home on a delayed steal
in which Shea wandered off first base to draw a throw from Nelson,
allowing Olson to score the go-ahead run.
The teams traded runs in the second
and third innings before UMass Lowell scored two in the fourth and
another in the fifth to open a 4-1 lead. Veo led off the fourth
with a single, then after the Ravens recorded an out, scored when
Manton reached on an error by Fournier. Manton advanced to third on
a wild pitch, then scored on a single through the right side by
senior Nate Liebenow (Hampton,
N.H./Winnacunnet). Page singled to lead off the fifth
and later scored when sophomore Ryan Davenport
(Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) grounded into a double
play.
The Ravens got a run back in the
bottom of the fifth as freshman Matt Anderson (Medford,
Mass./Medford) led off with a single and scored on
Shea's double to left with two out.

In the nightcap, UMass Lowell took
a 4-0 lead after two innings and cruised to an 8-1 victory to avoid
its second three-game regular season series sweep to Franklin
Pierce over the last two years.
Every River Hawk that had an at
bat, except one, collected a hit in the contest as they out-hit
Franklin Pierce 13-6. Sophomore Patrick Wilson (Dracut,
Mass./Bishop Guertin) finished 3-for-5 for UMass
Lowell. Classmate Ted Dillon (Dracut,
Mass./Dracut) was 1-3 with a double and two RBI,
while junior Bob Theriault (Lowell,
Mass./Lowell) was 2-4 with a run scored. Ryan
Davenport finished 2-4 with two runs scored.
Junior Jim Shaughnessy
(Lowell, Mass./Lowell) collected the complete-game
win (5-3) on the mound, allowing just the one earned run on six
hits with five strikeouts for UML.
Junior Bryan Duplissie
(East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) suffered his first
loss of the season on the mound (5-1) for Franklin Pierce as he
yielded six runs, just three earned, on ten hits with three
strikeouts and a walk over seven innings. He fared better at the
plate, hitting 2-for-3 with a double and
RBI.
Elliott Shea had another strong
game for Franklin Pierce at the plate as he was 2-4 with a run
scored. Mike Chambers finished 1-3, while Garrett Olson was 1-4
with a double.
Nate Liebenow tripled to lead off
the bottom of the first, and then scored on a Sean
Patno (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) sacrifice fly.
The River Hawks added three in the second, loading the bases with a
pair of singles and an error. The Ravens got a fielder's choice to
knock down one runner a the plate for an out, but Dillon registered
a sacrifice fly and scored two runs thanks to a pair of Raven
errors on a Patno ground ball to short.
After UML added a run in the sixth
to take a 5-0 advantage, Franklin Pierce scored its lone run in the
seventh. Shea singled up the middle to lead off the frame, advanced
to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Duplissie's double to
center with two out.
Veo (single) and Dillon (double)
registered RBI hits for the River Hawks to round out the scoring in
the eighth.
