Ravens snap two-game skid with
11-run, 17-hit explosion to down Setters
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (April
21, 2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 29 in this week's
Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, erupted for
17 hits in posting an 11-1 victory over Pace University, ranked
fourth in the region, to snap a two-game skid in Northeast-10
Conference action at Finnerty Field this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce, which had been
held to a single run over its last two games including Tuesday's
3-0 setback to Pace at Dr. Pappas Field, scored a run in the first
inning for the 14th time this season (11-3 record) and
led 4-1 before erupting for five runs in the seventh to break the
game open.
Junior right-hander
Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock
Regional) improved to 4-0 with eight strong innings,
allowing just the one earned run while scattering nine hits and a
walk with four strikeouts. Duplissie also had a pair of hits at the
plate, including a double, and finished 2-4 with an RBI.
Junior Shawn Hayes
(Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) sparked the Ravens
offense as he hit 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI.
Sophomore Kim Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham)
was 3-5 with a double and two RBI, while classmate
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) was also 3-5 with a pair of doubles. Olson was
also hit by a pitch for the 23rd time in 81 career
games, setting a new program record.
Freshman Matt Arburr
(Bristol, Conn./Bristol) hit 2-for-3 for Pace with a
double, while classmate Jack Cawley (Bronx, N.Y./Iona
Prep) was 2-4 with a run scored. Junior
Mike Pahira (Hombel, N.J./Hombel)
finished 1-2 with a double and
RBI.
Senior right-hander
Robert Van Riper (Bloomingdale,
N.J./Butler) took the loss for the Setters (1-1) as
he surrendered seven runs, five earned, on ten hits and three walks
with no strikeouts over six innings. In fact, none of the three
Pace pitchers managed a strikeout against the Ravens.
Franklin Pierce jumped on the board
in the top of the first as Olson doubled down the leftfield line
and scored on an error by the Pace first baseman. The Ravens added
a pair in the third as Chambers reached on an error with two out
and Hayes smacked his third home run of the season.
Pace scored its lone run in the
fifth when Cawley led off with a single down the leftfield line,
stole second, then scored on Pahira's double to right-center.
Franklin Pierce got that run back
in the sixth as Duplissie singled to center and scored on a
sacrifice fly from Anderson. The Ravens broke the game open with
five in the seventh for a 9-1 advantage. Olson led off with a
double and later scored on a wild pitch. Hayes ripped a two-run
double down the line in left and scored on Duplissie's double. Hart
drove in Duplissie with a sac fly. Junior Mike Feetham
(Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) rounded out the scoring
with a two-run double in the ninth.
Franklin Pierce (17-9, 11-6 NE-10)
is back in action tomorrow when it hosts American International
College at 3:30 p.m. Pace (20-12, 15-4 NE-10) visits Saint Anselm
College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
