Fournier sharp in seven three-hit shutout innings, strikes out
career-best 13
RINDGE, N.H. (April 10,
2005) - Franklin Pierce, ranked second in this week's
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division
II Northeast Region poll, completed a three-game weekend series
sweep of Merrimack College with a commanding 11-0 victory at Dr.
Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.
Sophomore right-hander
Daniel Fournier (Worcester, Mass./Holy
Name) fired seven innings of three-hit shutout
baseball, striking out a career-high 13 batters and walking just
one to pick up his second win of the season (2-0). He surrendered
two hits over the first three innings, then held Merrimack without
a hit until a single in the seventh as he retired 12 of the last 14
batters he
faced.
Sophomore Mike Chambers
(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) singled through the
left side in the third to extend his current hitting streak to 18
games, matching the program's single-season mark accomplished by
Scott Loiseau and Paul McAuliffe during the 2001 season. Chambers
was 1-for-4 on the day with a walk and two runs scored.
Junior Bryan Duplissie
(East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional) led the
offense today as he hit 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three
RBI. Sophomore Kim Hart (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) was 2-4 with a double and three RBI,
while junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy
Name) finished 1-3 with two RBI. Sophomore
Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Norway)
singled to left in the fourth to extend his current hitting streak
to 15 games.
Junior Jeff Ghiloni
(South Portland, Maine/South Portland) and freshman
Ryan Shepard (Andover, Mass./Andover)
each registered doubles to account for half of Merrimack's hit
total on the afternoon. Sophomore Jesse Boillat (North
Adams, Mass./Drury) and freshman Mark
Pierre (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) both finished
1-for-3.
Junior Mike Lanciani
(Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep) took the loss as he
was hit for nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits and two walks
with two strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
Franklin Pierce, winners of a
season-best six-straight and eight of nine, jumped out to an early
lead, scoring twice in the first inning en route to building a 9-0
lead after four. Olson reached on an error and scored on a Hayes
sacrifice fly, while Duplissie doubled in junior
Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant), who
walked.
Freshman Matt Anderson
(Medford, Mass./Medford) tripled and scored on a
Mike Feetham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy)
ground out in the second, before Hart stroked a two-out two-run
double into the gap in left-center in the third.
The Ravens broke the game open with
four in the fourth as ten batters came to the plate. Hayes
registered an RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded,
before Duplissie added a two-run single. Hart singled to center to
score the ninth run with two out.
Franklin Pierce rounded out the
scoring in the eighth as sophomore Greg Redding
(Kerhonkson, N.Y./Rondout Valley) smacked a two-run
double off the base of the wall in right.
Franklin Pierce (12-6, 6-3 NE-10)
is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Assumption College in
Conference play at 3:30 p.m. Merrimack (4-16, 3-6 NE-10) hosts
Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
