Hawks withstand late Ravens rally;
Holsworth nets 21
RINDGE, N.H. (January 11,
2005) - Saint Anselm, receiving votes in this week's NABC
Division II poll, withstood a late Franklin Pierce rally to post a
77-69 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at
the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse tonight.
Saint Anselm got solid production
out of a trio of juniors, who each scored in double-digits.
Jim Holsworth (Bogata, N.J./Bogata)
netted a game-best 21 points, nailing five of his ten three-point
attempts, to go with five assists and three steals. Jim
Moore (Worcester, Mass./Youngstown State) totaled 19
points, on six-of-eight shooting from the field to go with a 7-of-9
effort at the line, and added five rebounds. Matt
Cahill (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham)
registered 18 points and five assists.
Freshman Mitchell
Johnson (Nassua, Bahamas/Cushing Academy) led the way
for Franklin Pierce with 15 points, hitting 4-9 from three-point
range, eight rebounds and a season-high eight assists, while junior
Justin Powell (Brookline,
Mass./Brookline) netted a team-best 18 points to go
along with a game-high nine boards, while classmate
Pierre Sully (Jamaica Plain, N.Y./North Cambridge
Catholic) rounded out the Ravens double-digit scorers
with 14 points to go with five rebounds.
Saint Anselm shot 53.8-percent
(14-26) from the field, including 50% (6-12) from three-point
range, and led by as many as 16 points in the first half before
taking a 39-26 advantage into the intermission. The Ravens shot
just 37% (10-27) in the stanza.
Franklin Pierce cut the deficit to
five (46-41) on a three-pointer by Sully 5:21 into the second. The
Hawks regained a double-digit lead (56-46) after a Holsworth three
at the 10:20-mark, but the Ravens closed within five again (62-57)
after a Johnson three with 4:18 to play.
Saint Anselm's lead was 11 (74-63)
after a pair of Holsworth free-throws with 57-seconds to play, but
the Ravens full-court pressure resulted a five-straight points,
keyed by a Nazim Senaldi (Istanbul,
Turkey) three, to get within six (74-68) with
32-seconds on the clock. The Hawks were able to seal victory by
hitting 15-of-19 free-throw attempts in the second half. The Ravens
converted just 9-of-18 of its free throws for the contest.
Franklin Pierce (3-10, 1-7 NE-10)
returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Southern Connecticut
State University for a Conference tilt at 3:30 p.m. Saint Anselm
(10-2, 5-2 NE-10) visits Southern Connecticut on Thursday at 7:30
p.m.
