All four Falcon runs unearned as Ravens commit seven
errors
WALTHAM, Mass. (April 8,
2004) - Bentley College took advantage of seven Franklin
Pierce errors, scoring four unearned runs, including two in the
bottom of the tenth inning, to post a 4-3 victory in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at DeFelice Field this afternoon.
Sophomore second baseman
Mike Chambers' (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) second error of the afternoon
allowed sophomore GJ Vicente (Salem, N.H./Central
Catholic) and junior Tim Bryant (Reading,
Mass./Reading) to cross the plate with the tying and
winning runs in the bottom of the tenth.
Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 7 in
this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
(NCBWA) Northeast Region poll, had regained the lead in the top of
the tenth as sophomore Elliott Shea (Jaffrey,
N.H./Conant) led off with a single to center and
scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Garrett Olson
(Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills).
The loss squandered a solid start
by junior right-hander Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg,
Mass./Drury), who allowed two unearned runs on five
hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.
Freshman Neil Cacciola (North Andover,
Mass./Wakefield) suffered the loss despite yielding
just a walk and no hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief,
surrendering the two unearned runs.
Shea finished 3-for-5 for the
Ravens with a double and two runs scored. Senior Dante
Blancarte (South Berwick, Maine/Amesbury (Mass.)) hit
2-3 with a double and RBI. Junior Eric Cavers
(Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) was 1-3 with a run
scored, while sophomore Shawn Hayes (Charlton,
Mass./Holy Name) returned to the lineup for the first
time since March 18 and roped a double.
Freshman Steve Schedin
(Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) was the lone Falcon with
multiple hits as he batted 2-4. Bryant finished 1-4 with two runs
scored, while Vicente also scored twice, reaching base both
times on errors.
Senior right-hander Joe
Marchesi (Everett, Mass./Everett) went the distance
for Bentley to pick up the win, allowing three runs, just one
earned, on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Franklin Pierce jumped ahead with
two runs in the top of the first. Cavers led off the game with a
single and advanced to second on a Shea double before scoring on a
sacrifice fly by Blancarte. Shea scored when Bentley junior
Chris Methe (Longmeadow,
Mass./Longmeadow) dropped a fly ball off the bat of
Chambers.
Bentley knotted the score in the
eighth with Bryant lacing a leadoff single to center before scoring
when freshman Tom Haugh (Andover, Mass./St. John's
Prep) hit into a double play. Vicente scored the
tying run when sophomore Chad Mastin (Newmarket,
N.H./Newmarket) reached on an error by Hayes at
shortstop.
Franklin Pierce (10-15, 5-3 NE-10)
and Bentley (7-10, 5-6 NE-10) continue their three-game set
tomorrow in Waltham, Mass., at 3:30 p.m. The series will conclude
at Crystal Field, in Rindge, N.H., on Saturday at 1 p.m.
