River Hawks out-score Ravens
20-6 over final 7:20 to run to victory
RINDGE, N.H. (December 5,
2004) - The University of Massachusetts Lowell scored 20
of the game's final 26 points to take control and collect a 76-63
victory over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference men's
basketball action at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse this afternoon.
UMass Lowell got another big game
from junior forward Stacey Moragne (Evanston,
Ill./Evanston), who netted nine-of-14 shots from the
field en route to a game-high 23 points to go with nine rebounds.
Classmate Carl Benn (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Lawrence
Woodmere Academy) came off the bench and added 17
points, aided by 9-11 shooting from the free-throw line, nine
rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Junior Brandon Arnette
(Lake Park, Fla./Tilton School) rounded out the River
Hawks double-digit scorers with 15 points, seven boards and four
assists. Freshman Andon El (Philadelphia, Pa./St. John
Neumann) chipped in with seven points, eight boards
and five blocks.
Freshman swingman
Mitchell Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Cushing
Academy) led Franklin Pierce with 18 points, hitting
6-12 from the field (5-11 three's), eight rebounds and two blocks.
Junior Justin Powell (Braintree,
Mass./Braintree) added 13 points, four rebounds and
two blocks, while freshmen Darrell Anderson (Kansas
City, Kan./The Winchendon School) and
Dominik Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif./A.B.
Miller) each chipped in eight points.
Franklin Pierce rallied for a
one-point lead (57-56) after a Mitchell three-point play when he
was fouled on a tremendous alley-oop dunk with 7:20 remaining in
the second half. The three-point play capped a 10-0 Ravens run
after they fell behind by nine (56-47) midway through the stanza.
UMass Lowell regained control with
a 10-1 run to get its lead back to nine (66:57) with four minutes
to play. Freshman Tyler Stoczynski (Erie,
Pa./McDowell) sparked the stretch with a pair of
lay-ups. The run keyed the River Hawks, who outscored Franklin
Pierce 20-6 over the final seven minutes of the contest.
In the first half, Franklin Pierce
held a six point lead on three occasions, and led by five (27-22)
after a Pierre Sully (Jamaica Plain, Mass./North
Cambridge) three-pointer with 8:07 left in the frame.
UML answered with a 16-2 run to open a nine-point edge (38-29) with
1:30 left before the intermission after a Moragne three-ball.
Franklin Pierce got back within
four at the break (38-34) as Mitchell hit a three and sophomore
Nazim Senaldi (Istanbul, Turkey) canned a
pair of free throws.
UMass Lowell hit 49.1-percent
(26-53) of its shots from the field for the day, including 51.7%
(15-29) in the first half, and out-scored Franklin Pierce 21-5 at
the free throw line. The River Hawks also enjoyed a 46-37 advantage
on the glass. The Ravens hit just 36.2% (25-69) from the field,
including 31.6% (12-38) in the second half.
Franklin Pierce (2-3, 1-2 NE-10)
returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts the College of
Saint Rose for an NE-10 battle at 7:30 p.m. UMass Lowell (4-2, 3-1
NE-10) travels to American International College on Wednesday at
7:30 p.m.
