NEW HAVEN Conn. (Oct. 28, 2004) –
The Franklin Pierce volleyball team defeated host Southern
Connecticut State University 3-0 (30-20, 30-25, 30-20) in
Northeast-10 Conference competition tonight. The Ravens took three
straight games to win their tenth match of the season. Their record
now stands at 10-11 overall and 6-7 in league play. With a victory
over neighboring Keene State tomorrow, the Ravens will reach .500
for the first time since they defeated Southern New Hampshire in
their second match of the season. Following the loss, the Owls
dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-11 in the conference.
Franklin Pierce received solid contributions from a number of
players. Leading the way was sophomore outside hitter Christina Collett (Tombstone,
Ariz./Tombstone), who tallied 18 kills. Senior middle hitter
Briana Bates (Belmont,
N.H./Endicott College) chipped in with ten kills, while
sophomore outside hitter Michelle
McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) posted eight
kills, eight digs, two aces and a block. Fueling the Ravens offense
with 36 assists was freshman setter Bria Williams (Chino Valley, Ariz./Chino
Valley). On the defensive side, junior defensive specialist
Tara Vece (Clinton, Conn./Morgan
School) totaled 11 digs for the visitors.
Franklin Pierce (10-11, 6-7 NE-10) will take the court again
tomorrow when they host Keene State College for a non-conference
match beginning at 6 p.m. Southern Connecticut (2-16, 0-11 NE-10)
returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Le Moyne for a
Northeast-10 Conference match at noon.
