#6 Franklin Pierce Runs Past Saint Rose, 7-0

Hislop's seven points, including hat trick, lifts Ravens to victory

RINDGE, N.H. (September 20, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 6 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, exploded for six goals over the opening 45-minutes and cruised to a 7-0 victory over The College of Saint Rose, ranked fifth in the New England Region, in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

Sophomore Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) led Franklin Pierce, now unbeaten at home against New England Region opponents in 90-straight matches, with seven points, including her first career hat trick. Junior All-American Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) totaled five points with a goal and three assists, while freshman Alex Scavo (Markham, Ontario/Brother Andre) netted two goals. Sophomore Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) chipped in a goal and assist for the Ravens.

Both teams finished the match with 16 shots, but Franklin Pierce had the better of the opportunities, placing 11 on target, compared to three for Saint Rose, and netted a season-high seven goals for its efforts.

The Ravens set the tone early as Hislop netted her first of the afternoon just 1:57 into the match. Welcome took a free kick from just inside midfield and lobbed it over the defense to send Hislop in one-on-one with Saint Rose sophomore goalkeeper Kat Marasia (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Hislop chipped the ball over Marasia, who came off her line to knock down the angle, into an open net.

Hughes put Franklin Pierce up 2-0 in the 13th minute when she chipped a free kick from 35-yards out over Marasia and just under the cross bar. Hughes set up the Ravens third marker in the 28th minute, with a chip pass over the top of the defense that found Scavo for a wide-open shot from a low angle through Marasia's legs.

Hislop connected with Welcome with a tight cross from the right side that Welcome headed in on the far post in the 35th minute.

Scavo netted her second of the afternoon in the 41st minute when sophomore Elizabeth Allen (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) sent a through ball in that Scavo walked on to and chipped a shot over sophomore goalkeeper Julienne Krause (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland), who had entered the match in the 32nd minute.

Hislop rounded out the first half scoring just 55-seconds later when Welcome fired a long through ball that sent her in one-on-one with the keeper. Hislop deked Krause and fired a low shot into the open net. She rounded out her hat trick in the 65th minute with another chip shot over the goalkeeper after Welcome sent her in one-on-one with a through ball.

Senior goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) registered three saves in goal for the Ravens to post her third shutout of the season (11th career). The shutout snapped a string of four matches in which the Ravens had yielded a goal. Franklin Pierce has not allowed a goal in five-straight matches since October 2000.

Marasia made just one save in 32 minutes of action, while Krause made three stops over the final 58 minutes for Saint Rose.

Franklin Pierce (6-1, 5-0 NE-10) rounds out its three-match home stand on Wednesday when it hosts Stonehill College at 3:30 p.m. Saint Rose (4-3, 2-3 NE-10) hosts Le Moyne College on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
