Scavo, Hislop pace Ravens to victory

COMMERCE, Texas. (September 14, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 3 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, rebounded from its first regular season loss in nearly three seasons on Friday with a 4-1 victory over Angelo State University in non-conference women's soccer action at Texas A&M-Commerce this afternoon.

Freshman forward Alex Scavo (Markham, Ontario/Brother Andre) totaled five points and sophomore forward Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) dished three assists to lead Franklin Pierce. Sophomore midfielder Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) chipped in with pair of helpers.

The Ravens, coming off their first regular season loss since October, 2000, to No. 16 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, struck early today when junior All-American Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season just 7:50 into the contest. Hislop and freshman Mia Makarainen (Espoo, Finland) were credited with assists on the play.

Hislop and Hughes set up Scavo's first of two goals on the afternoon just over ten minutes later from ten yards out at the 18:08-mark.

Angelo State pulled a goal back just 2:18 later when junior Shana Brown (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita) connected with sophomore Casey Halamicek (San Angelo, Texas/Central) for a breakaway goal.

Franklin Pierce regained its two-goal cushion in the 34th minute when Hughes and Hislop connected with Scavo again, who headed in her third marker of the season. The Ravens closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute when senior Jillian Tente (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) netted her first goal of the season from five yards out off a pass from Scavo on the left side.

Ravens senior goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) registered a career-best eight saves to preserve the victory and avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since 1993. Rambelles junior Lisa Carey (Spring, Texas/Klein) made eight saves of her own in the losing cause.

Franklin Pierce (4-1, 3-0 NE-10) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action this week when it hosts Assumption College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Angelo State (2-3) hosts Saint Mary's College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
