Ravens shutout for first time
since 2000 season - 56 match streak snapped
COMMERCE, Texas (September
12, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 3 in this week's
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II poll, facing its second nationally-ranked opponent in
three days fell to No. 16 Texas A&M-Commerce, 2-0, this
afternoon.
Franklin Pierce sees a streak of 56
matches without being shutout snapped with the loss. The Ravens
were last blanked by Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0, on
October 21, 2000. That match also marked the Ravens last regular
season loss - ending a 38-match unbeaten streak.
Texas A&M-Commerce freshman
Stacy McDaniel (Houston, Texas/Jersey
Village) registered a season-high nine saves (seven
first half) to preserve her first career shutout in goal. Franklin
Pierce out-shot the Lions 23-16 for the match, including a 14-10
margin in the opening half. Both teams placed nine shots on goal.
Franklin Pierce senior goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard
(Korgen, Norway) registered a career-best six saves
(five first half) in
defeat.
Junior forward Emily
Brueggemann (Wichita, Kan./Wichita North) netted both
Lions goals on the afternoon. She opened the scoring at the
31:12-mark when she fired a rebound past Kibsgaard, who failed to
corral a shot from sophomore Erin de Wolfe (Grand
Prairie, Texas/Grand Prairie).
Brueggemann gave A&M-Commerce
an insurance tally just 11-seconds into the second half with her
team-leading sixth goal of the season when she took a pass from de
Wolfe from the left side.
Franklin Pierce failed on several
opportunities in the opening 20 minutes when it fired off eight
unanswered shots over a ten-minute span, with McDaniel making three
saves during that stretch. She also made two quick saves to
preserve the one-goal advantage on Ravens sophomore
Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland)
in the 34th and 35th minutes.
Franklin Pierce (3-1, 3-0 NE-10)
returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it faces Angelo State
University at A&M-Commerce at noon (ET). Texas A&M-Commerce
(5-0-1) visits Dallas Baptist on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (CT).
