Franklin Pierce Splits at Southern Connecticut

Weagle, Ravens take game one in ten innings, Owls rally for split in the nightcap

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 3, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Division II Northeast Regional poll, and Southern Connecticut State University, ranked fifth, opened a key Northeast-10 Conference Markey Division weekend baseball series with a split of a doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU this afternoon.

The Ravens scored four runs in the top of the tenth in game one to open the day with a 6-2 victory. The Owls rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out an 8-7 nightcap win. In game one, Franklin Pierce scored four times in the top of the tenth inning to break open a 2-2 contest. Junior right-hander Matt Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shephard Hills) picked up his career-best seventh win of the season (7-1) with his second career ten-inning complete-game effort. Weagle allowed two earned runs on nine hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Freshman Nick Panza (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) batted 2-for-3 in the game with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Classmate Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) hit 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) belted a double and drove in a pair.

Junior lefthander Brian Forgione also went the distance for Southern and suffered the loss (3-2), allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Senior Alan Barbaro and sophomore Jon DeRubeis each hit 2-4 in the contest, with DeRubeis adding an RBI. Junior Bobby Pentino finished 2-5 with an RBI.

Freshman Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led off the Ravens tenth with a double down the leftfield line. He was lifted for a pinch-runner, freshman Randy Fenton, who was advanced to third on a sac bunt from Panza. After a walk, Cavers doubled to left center to score Fenton, and Shea followed with a two-run single. Senior Dan Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) singled in Shea to round out the scoring.

The Ravens trailed 2-1 entering the seventh, but Panza registered an RBI double to score Chambers, who reached on an error, to knot the score.

In the nightcap, SCSU plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the sweep. Junior Chris Nugent registered a pinch-hit double to start the frame and scored the tying run when the throw on a DeRubeis fielder's choice from Ravens freshman shortstop Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) was not in time at the plate. Junior Henry Lee followed with a fielder's choice that forced out DeRubeis at second. Lee scored on a double to right center by sophomore Mel Davis to end the game.

Pentino was 2-3 in the game with a stolen base, while Davis finished 2-4 with an RBI and run scored. DeRubeis and junior Orlando Lugo each added a pair of RBI.

Freshman Matt Hennessey picked up the win (2-3) with two innings of perfect relief with a strikeout.

Sophomore Keith Brouillard (Westport, Mass./Somerset) suffered the loss (1-2) in relief for the Ravens. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks over 3.2 innings. Franklin Pierce starter Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) didn't record an out in yielding four earned on two hits with two walks. Freshman Arric Mather (Danville, N.H./Winnacunnet) kept Franklin Pierce in the game with 4.2 innings of strong relief, allowing an earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Close led the Ravens offense, hitting 2-5 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI. Junior Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) was 2-3 with an RBI, while Chambers finished 2-4. Cavers and Shea each finished 2-6.

Franklin Pierce staked out a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a three-run bomb from Close down the leftfield line. Southern answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame take the lead.

Franklin Pierce (22-13, 15-9 NE-10) and Southern Connecticut (19-15, 15-8 NE-10) will round out their weekend series with a crucial rubber game tomorrow afternoon in Rindge, N.H., at 1 p.m.
