Franklin Pierce Shuts Out Teikyo Post, 5-0

White and McAuliffe lead Ravens to non-conference victory

WATERBURY, Conn. (March 25, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, receiving votes in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll, returned to the north a got another strong effort from its pitching staff in posting a 5-0 victory over Teikyo Post University in non-conference baseball action at Waterbury Municipal Stadium this afternoon.

Senior All-Region right-hander Jon White (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) fired seven innings of four-hit shutout baseball without issuing a walk and striking out seven for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Tyler Cummings (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) and junior Matt Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shephard Hill) each added an inning of shutout relief to close out the Ravens second shutout of the season.

Senior centerfielder Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) was a perfect five-for-five at the plate, scoring three runs with an RBI, a double and a triple to lead the Franklin Pierce offense. Junior Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) was 3-5 with two doubles and three RBI, while sophomore Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) was 3-4 with a stolen base.

Sophomore Omar Taveras suffered the loss as he allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.

Franklin Pierce jumped ahead with a single run in the first as senior Dan Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) led off with a single and later scored on a Josh Coughlin (Keene, N.H./Keene) ground out.

Single runs were the order of the day as the Ravens pushed their second run across the plate in the third when McAuliffe tripled and scored on Blancarte's first double of the afternoon. Blancarte's second double of the game scored McAuliffe again in the fifth.

Close scored the Ravens fourth run in the seventh after he reached after getting hit by a pitch and McAuliffe singled him in. The McAuliffe/Blancarte duo hooked up again for the Ravens final run in the ninth when McAuliffe doubled and scored on a Blancarte single.

Franklin Pierce (7-4, 0-0 NE-10), off to its best start in program history, opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Sunday when it travels to UMass Lowell for a doubleheader beginning at noon. Saturday's scheduled home doubleheader with Saint Anselm College has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced.
