Hunt registers third-straight
double-double of the season to lead Ravens to win
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (November
23, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce men's basketball team
collected its first win of the season with a come-from-behind 72-69
victory over Teikyo Post University in second-day action at the
University of Bridgeport Purple Knight Classic in the Harvey
Hubbell Gymnasium this afternoon.
Senior preseason All-American
Jimmie Hunt (Utica, N.Y./Mount Ararat
(Maine)) led all scorers and registered his
third-straight double-double to open the season as he totaled a
season-high 27 points, hitting 8-12 from the field (3-4 three's)
and 8-10 from the free-throw line, to go with a career-best 11
rebounds this afternoon. Hunt was later named to the All-Tournament
team at the event as he averaged 23 points and 10.5 rebounds in the
two-day event.
Freshman Ryan McLellan
(Newport, Maine/Nokomis) added a season-high 19
points, aided by an 11-15 effort at the line, four rebounds and
three assists.
Franklin Pierce trailed by one,
34-33, at the half, but hit 45.8-percent (11-24) of its shots in
the second half, and out-scored the Eagles by a 26-13 margin at the
free-throw line for the contest. The Ravens held Teikyo Post to
just 36.1% (26-72) shooting for the game, including 35.3% (12-34)
over the final 20
minutes.
Senior center Lauriston
Beech (Bridgeport, Conn./Bridgeport Central), a
transfer from Central Connecticut State University, pounded the
glass for a game-high 19 rebounds (ten offensive) to go with 14
points to lead Teikyo Post. Classmate Ron Christy
(Stratford, Conn./Stratford), Division II's top
scorer last season, netted a team-best 23 points to go with four
rebounds and three assists.
The Eagles out-rebounded Franklin
Pierce by a 54-39 margin for the contest, including 30-26 on the
Ravens defensive end for the afternoon.
Franklin Pierce (1-2, 0-1 NE-10)
returns to action on Tuesday night when it faces UMass Lowell,
ranked No. 4 in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25 poll, at
7:30 p.m. Teikyo Post (0-2) hosts Dominican College Tuesday at 8
p.m.
