Welcome's goal in 70th minute
lifts Ravens to victory
RINDGE, N.H. (October 4,
2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 4 in this week's
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II poll, got a goal midway through the second half to slip
past Pace University, ranked tenth in the New England Region, in
Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Crystal Field this
afternoon.
Junior All-American
Meghan Welcome (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) netted the lone goal of the match
when she flew unmarked into the middle of the penalty area and
headed in a sharp cross from sophomore Laura Hislop
(Belfast, Northern Ireland) from the right flank at
the
69:12-mark.
The goal culminated a series of
Franklin Pierce scoring chances that it just missed converting.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ria Carroll (Warwick, R.I./Toll
Gate) shined in net for Pace, registering eight
saves, and seemed in good position all afternoon as several Ravens
scoring chances finished with shots straight at her.
Franklin Pierce finished the match
with a 14-2 shots advantage for the match with most of its chances
coming over the final 45-minutes after it totaled just four shots
in the opening half. The Ravens tallied ten shots in the second
half, placing eight on net. Carroll made seven second half saves
for the Setters.
Franklin Pierce senior
Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) was
untested in goal, making no saves to post her fourth shutout of the
season. The shutout is also the 12th of her career to
move into sole possession of sixth place on the program's all-time
list, ahead of Jamee Viola ('92) and Barbara Carbon ('99) who
totaled 11 shutouts each.
Franklin Pierce (9-2, 8-1 NE-10)
returns to action on Wednesday for a key Conference and regional
match-up at No. 25 Bryant College at 3:30 p.m. Pace (4-6, 3-5
NE-10) visits UMass Lowell on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
