Morrell batters Ravens pitching and Belleau silences bats
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 5, 2002) - Saint Anselm
College rallied from behind twice en route to an 11-6 win over
Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at
Sullivan Park this afternoon. The game was a makeup of Wednesday's
rainout.
Saint Anselm took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth
inning and then added some insurance with three more in the sixth.
Sophomore designated hitter Keith Morrell drilled a bases loaded
double that emptied the bases and put the Hawks up 7-6 in the fifth
and chase Franklin Pierce starter Matt Weagle
(Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill). Freshman Josh
Skowyra followed with an RBI single.
In the sixth, seniors Jason Berset and Ken Kessaris led off the
inning with back-to-back solo homers and Morrell reached on a
fielders choice to drive in Marc Ouellet, who reached when he was
hit by a pitch.
Morrell wore out Franklin Pierce pitching as he hit
three-for-four with a double and six RBIs. Kessaris finished 4-5
with three runs scored, a homer and an RBI, while Ouellet was 2-4
with three runs scored, a double and two RBIs.
Freshman John Lenkowski earned the win (2-4) as he allowed six
runs, five earned, on seven hits with three walks and three
strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Classmate Mike Belleau picked up
his first career save as he tossed 3.2 innings of one-hit shutout
relief with three strikeouts and no walks.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning as
junior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro,
Mass./Foxboro) ripped a three-run homerun. After
Saint Anselm rallied with four runs (just one earned) in the bottom
of the frame, Franklin Pierce surged back ahead in the fifth
inning. Junior Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont
Regional) blasted a three-run homer to deep
leftfield.
Senior Scott Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter
Marian) hit 2-4 for Franklin Pierce with a run
scored. He also pitched three solid innings of relief as he
surrendered one earned run on two hits with a strikeout and no
walks while also posting two pickoffs. Junior Dan Close
(Leominster, Mass./Leominster) was the only other
Raven with multiple hits as he was 2-5 with a stolen base and run
scored.
Weagle (0-3) dropped his fourth-straight decision dating back to
last season as he allowed eight runs, just five earned, on nine
hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 4.1 innings of work.
Franklin Pierce (7-8, 2-2 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday
when it travels to North Andover, Mass., for a Conference
doubleheader at Merrimack College at noon. Saint Anselm (4-19, 2-5
NE-10) hosts American International College for a twinbill tomorrow
at noon.
