Bryant Blanks Franklin Pierce, 1-0

Johnson out-duels White, as Bryant takes three-of-four in weekend series

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (April 14, 2002) - Junior right-hander Doug Johnson fired 8.2 innings of five-hit shutout ball to lead Bryant College to a 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at the Bryant Baseball Complex this afternoon.

Johnson out-dueled Franklin Pierce junior right-hander Jon White (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) to earn his fifth win (5-1) of the spring. Johnson struck out nine and walked none on the afternoon.

White was the hard-luck loser (5-3) on the day as he yielded just one earned run, scattering six hits, striking out seven and walking just one in the complete game effort.

The lone run against White came in the bottom of the first inning as Bryant junior Mike Ciallella's sacrifice fly scored classmate Jim Collins. Collins reached earlier in the frame with a sun-aided double that Franklin Pierce leftfielder Mike MacSwain (Stoughton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) lost in the sun, then advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Ravens threatened in the third inning with runners on second and third thanks to an error, a base hit and a passed ball, but Johnson fanned Franklin Pierce junior Dan Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) to work out of the jam.

After Johnson retired the first two batters in the ninth, junior Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) reached on an infield hit, followed by a double from freshman Bear Dunn (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) which chased Johnson from the ballgame.

Junior Paul Gately was called on to close the door, but walked Franklin Pierce pinch-hitter Al Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) to load the bases. Another Franklin Pierce pinch-hitter, Teddy Guardiani (Providence, R.I./Hudson (Mass.) Catholic), worked the count full, before Gately struck him out to end the game and earn his school-record seventh save of the season.

Senior rightfielder Dan England was Bryant's lone multiple hit batter as he finished two-for-three with a double and a stolen base.

Franklin Pierce junior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) hit 2-4 with a stolen base to lead the Ravens. Senior shortstop Scott Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) saw his 15-game hitting streak halted with an 0-4 outing.

Franklin Pierce (13-13, 7-7 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Bentley College at 3:30 p.m. Bryant (22-13, 12-4 NE-10) hosts American International College on Wednesday.
