2002 CAPE COD CLASSIC Franklin Pierce Opens With Two Wins

Shank fires no-hitter to lead Ravens past Framingham State White hurls Ravens to win over Saint Michael's

EASTHAM, Mass. (March 9, 2002) - It marks the earliest season-opener in program history, but the Franklin Pierce pitching was at its best as Franklin Pierce rolled to a pair of wins in the 2002 Cape Cod Classic at Nauset Regional High School this afternoon.

Junior righthander Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) fired a no-hitter to lead Franklin Pierce to a 10-0 win over Framingham State College to start the day off. Shank (1-0) struck out 11 and walked just two in the seven-inning complete game outing.

Freshmen Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) and Bear Dunn (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) had successful debuts for Franklin Pierce. Cavers sparked a two-run sixth inning with his first career homerun and finished the game hitting two-for-four with two RBIs. Dunn helped Franklin Pierce break open a 3-0 game as his two run double sparked a three-run fourth. He hit 2-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs.

Senior Scott Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) was 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Senior Chris Hendricks suffered the loss (0-1) for Framingham State as he yielded six runs, five earned, on seven hits with one strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.

In game two for Franklin Pierce, junior righty Jon White (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) fanned a career-high 14 batters as the Ravens posted a 7-1 victory over Saint Michael's College.

White (1-0) went the distance in the eight-inning game as he allowed one earned run on five hits and just one walk to go with the 14 strikeouts.

Loiseau helped break a scoreless tie in the third, when he stroked an RBI triple that scored sophomore Greg Basile (Suffield, Conn./Suffield). Loiseau later scored on another triple off the bat of junior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro).

With hits in the two games, Loiseau extended his school-record hitting streak to 20-games, which dates back to last season. He finished the nightcap hitting 2-4 with the triple and RBI.

Saint Michael's closed the gap to 3-1 in the bottom half of the third as freshman David Deyo doubled and scored on an RBI single by senior Juan Montanez.

The Ravens broke the game open in the fourth with three more runs as an RBI double by senior Eric Burney (Rockville, Conn./Rockville) scored Cavers and Mike Callahan (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian).

Dunn had another solid game as he hit 2-2 with two doubles and a run scored for Franklin Pierce in the nightcap.

Sophomore Richard Dailey suffered the loss (0-1) for the Purple Knights as he allowed three earned runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in three innings pitched.
