Grand Canyon Blanks Franklin Pierce Twice to Sweep Twinbill

Brockman fires two-hit shutout to lead Antelopes on game one Corley out duels Shank to lead GCU in nightcap

PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 23, 2002) - A pair of University of Arizona transfers posted shutouts as Grand Canyon University swept a doubleheader with Franklin Pierce in non-conference baseball action at Brazell Stadium today.

The Antelopes posted a 9-0 victory in game one before posting a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.

Senior righthander David Brockman fired a two-hit shutout to help lead Grand Canyon in game one. The transfer from Arizona walked none and struck out six in the complete-game effort. Brockman (6-1) was perfect until Franklin Pierce sophomoreDante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) looped a single into right-centerfield in the fifth inning.

Senior Mike Wojtkowski led the Antelopes offense as he batted three-for-four with a double, a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs. His two-run shot in the fifth sparked a four-run inning as GCU broke a 4-0 game open and he also finished just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Junior Greg Serrano hit 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while senior Matt Denny and sophomore Andy Lane each chipped in two hits.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Matt Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) suffered the loss (0-2) as he yielded six earned runs on ten hits with two strikeouts and three walks in four-plus innings of work.

In addition to Blancarte's single, freshman Brandon Dooley (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) had the only other Ravens hit with a pinch-hit single in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Grand Canyon sophomore Klent Corley out-dueled Franklin Pierce junior Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) for the victory.

Corley (4-2) tossed a six-hit shutout with ten strikeouts and just two walks in the seven-inning outing. Shank (2-1) suffered from lack of run support as he allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits with five strikeouts in the complete game effort. He allowed just one run on one hit over the first five innings before things unraveled in the sixth.

The Antelopes got one run in the third inning as junior Travis Kaats was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and later scored on a single by senior Matt Denny.

GCU added four insurance runs in the fourth as Joey Reiman laced an RBI single and Greg Serrano ripped a two-run single. The fourth run came as result of an Franklin Pierce error.

Franklin Pierce left four runners on base, including three in scoring position for the game. Junior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and freshmanEric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) each hit 1-2 for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce (4-6) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference contest in Manchester, N.H., at Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m. Grand Canyon (24-10) hosts UC Davis for a four game series next weekend.
