Brockman fires two-hit shutout to
lead Antelopes on game one Corley out duels Shank to lead GCU in
nightcap
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 23,
2002) - A pair of University of Arizona transfers posted
shutouts as Grand Canyon University swept a doubleheader with
Franklin Pierce in non-conference baseball action at Brazell
Stadium today.
The Antelopes posted a 9-0 victory
in game one before posting a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
Senior righthander David Brockman
fired a two-hit shutout to help lead Grand Canyon in game one. The
transfer from Arizona walked none and struck out six in the
complete-game effort. Brockman (6-1) was perfect until Franklin
Pierce sophomoreDante Blancarte (Amesbury,
Mass./Amesbury) looped a single into
right-centerfield in the fifth inning.
Senior Mike Wojtkowski led the
Antelopes offense as he batted three-for-four with a double, a
homer, two runs scored and three RBIs. His two-run shot in the
fifth sparked a four-run inning as GCU broke a 4-0 game open and he
also finished just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Junior Greg Serrano hit 2-3 with a
double, two runs scored and an RBI, while senior Matt Denny and
sophomore Andy Lane each chipped in two hits.
Franklin Pierce sophomore
Matt Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd
Hill) suffered the loss (0-2) as he yielded six
earned runs on ten hits with two strikeouts and three walks in
four-plus innings of work.
In addition to Blancarte's single,
freshman Brandon Dooley (Lynn, Mass./Lynn
English) had the only other Ravens hit with a
pinch-hit single in the seventh.
