Grand Canyon Silences Franklin Pierce, 6-0

Quill fires shutout and Grand Canyon helped by three Ravens errors

PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 18, 2002) - Sophomore righthander Mike Quill fired a six-hit shutout to lead Grand Canyon University to a 6-0 win over Franklin Pierce in non-conference baseball action at Brazell Stadium tonight.

Quill, a transfer from the University of Arizona, was making his first start of the season as he had posted a 0.64 earned run average in 14 relief innings prior to tonight's game. He struck out seven Ravens a walked four in the complete game effort.

Junior Chris Raymond led the Antelopes offense with three hits. Senior Mike Wojtkowski and juniors Joey Reiman and Justin Dehmer each added two singles and an RBI apiece.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Matt Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, just two earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and just one walk in six innings. Freshman A.J. Hatton (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) tossed two innings of two-hit shutout baseball in relief.

Junior Dan Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) drilled three doubles to highlight the Franklin Pierce offense on the night. Freshman Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) added two hits.

Senior shortstop Scott Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) had his school-record 21-game hitting streak halted, while juniors Mike Callahan (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) had 13 and 12 game strings dating back to last season all snapped.

Grand Canyon got on the board in the second inning as junior Chris Serrano reached on a Weagle error, then came around to score on a wild pitch.

GCU added three more unearned runs on the third inning as senior Matt Denny scored on a Wojtowski sacrifice fly after reaching on a Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) miscue at first.

Serrano scored on an RBI single by Dehmer and senior Trent Otis scored after a throwing error by Franklin Pierce freshman Bear Dunn (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill). Serrano added a sac fly in the fifth and Wojtowski scored on a Reiman single to round out the Antelopes scoring.
