Ravens clinch second-straight
NE-10 regular season championship
RINDGE, N.H. (October 22,
2002) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 4 in this week's
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II poll, clinched its second-straight Northeast-10
Conference regular season championship with a 5-0 victory over
Saint Anselm College in NE-10 women's soccer action at Crystal
Field this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce clinches the
top-seed in next week's NE-10 Tournament and will host a Conference
Quarterfinal match on Wednesday, October 30. The semifinals and
championship will be hosted by Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.,
on November 2-3.
This afternoon, the Ravens broke
open a 1-0 halftime advantage with three goals in a 12-minute span
early in the second half. Sophomore Meghan Welcome (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) netted her second hat trick of the season to lead
the Franklin Pierce offense.
Welcome opened the scoring when she
chased down a volley into space from senior Kamille Rosenfalck
(Borup, Denmark) and one-touched the ball into a wide-open net just
5:39 before intermission.
Senior Andrea Caesar (Visby,
Sweden) began the Ravens three-goal barrage just 3:55 into the
second half when she collected her own rebound of a shot deflected
by the Saint Anselm defense and buried it into the lower left
corner.
Welcome netted her second goal of
the match in the 56th minute when she knocked in a loose ball on
the goal line after Hawks sophomore goalkeeper Kelley Moylan
(Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) looked to have smothered a cross. Welcome
finished off her hat trick when senior Nicole Cheadle (West
Chester, Pa./Henderson) caught the Hawks on an offside trap on a
direct kick and found Welcome for a wide open shot at the
60:42-mark.
Sophomore Sarah von Colditz (Lake
Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego) rounded out the scoring when she
collected a failed clearing attempt and one-timed a shot into the
lower left corner of the net for her first career goal in the 86th
minute.
Franklin Pierce registered a
commanding 20-1 shots advantage for the match and junior goalkeeper
Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) recorded one save in 77-minutes of
action to claim her seventh shutout of the season. Moylan stopped
four shots for Saint Anselm.
Franklin Pierce (12-0-2, 11-0-2
NE-10) rounds out the regular season on Saturday when it hosts
Granite State rival Southern New Hampshire University at 1 p.m.
Thursday's non-conference match at Green Mountain College has been
cancelled. Saint Anselm (6-8-2, 5-6-2 NE-10) hosts Assumption
