Warriors end Ravens 29-match
Conference winning streak
RINDGE, N.H. (October 2,
2002) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 2 in this week's
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II poll, needed a second half goal to salvage a 1-1 draw
with No. 18 Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference women's
soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.
Merrimack snapped Franklin Pierce's
29-match winning streak against Northeast-10 Conference opponents,
dating back to a 2-2 tie at College of Saint Rose on October 24,
2000. The Warriors also ended a string of 29-straight Ravens
victories at Crystal Field dating back to a 3-2 loss to Westmont
College on September 30, 2000. Merrimack also ended streak of
15-straight losses to Franklin Pierce dating back to a 2-0 loss in
1991.
Merrimack struck just 2:42 before
the intermission when junior Lindsay Bruno found sophomore Laurie
Lamoureux with a through ball on the counter attack which sent her
in one-on-one with Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper
Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) and
tucked the shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Merrimack kept the momentum through
halftime, but a 15-yard blast by Franklin Pierce sophomore
Martta Makila (Vantaa, Finland), after
the Warriors failed to clear away a corner kick, knotted the score
at the 72:01-mark.
The goal gave Franklin Pierce new
energy, but it was unable to capitalize. Senior Angela
Verdoes (Katwijk Aan Zee, Holland) missed on a
wide-open shot with 1:20 remaining in regulation that would have
avoided overtime.
Verdoes had another bid in just
three-minutes into overtime that would have ended it, but she just
missed a one-timed shot to the short side of the net.
The Ravens had two more bids in the
first overtime off a corner kick with two-minutes left.
Nicole Cheadle's (West Chester,
Pa./Henderson) header was stopped at the goal line by
a Merrimack defender, beforeKamille Rosenfalck's
(Borup, Denmark) shot on the rebound was punched away
by Merrimack junior goalkeeper Erika Paiva.
Franklin Pierce posted a 15-7 shots
advantage for the match, but it was aided by a 5-0 advantage in
overtime.
Paiva finished with five saves to
preserve the draw for Merrimack, while Kibsgaard registered two
stops.

Pleasantville, N.Y., to face Pace University, ranked eighth in New
England, at 2 p.m. Merrimack (7-3-1, 7-1-1 NE-10) travels to
