Verdoes nets pair as top-seeded
Ravens advance to face Bryant on Saturday
RINDGE, N.H. (October 30,
2001) - Franklin Pierce College, ranked No. 1 in this
week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
Division II poll, began defense of its Northeast-10 Conference
Tournament Championship with a 4-0 victory over eighth-seeded Saint
Michael's College in women's quarterfinal round action at Crystal
Field this afternoon.
The Ravens (18-0) advance to this
weekend's semifinal round and will play fourth-seeded Bryant
College (13-6) at Jess Dow Field on the campus of Southern
Connecticut State University at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs advanced with
a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Bentley College this afternoon after
trailing 2-0.
Junior Angela Verdoes
(Katwijk Aan Zee, Holland/Ter Leede) led FPC, who
netted two goals, while classmate April Mann (Brisbane,
Australia/Saint Thomas More) dished two assists.
During the regular-season encounter
between these two teams, the Ravens needed 71 minutes to score its
first goal enroute to a 2-1 win, but scored all four tallies this
afternoon in the first 65-minutes of play.
Senior Christine Kirby
(Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) put the Ravens on the
scoreboard with the gamewinning score at the 16:49 mark as she
headed in a corner kick from Mann at the near post.
Verdoes gave the Ravens a two-goal
lead in the 25th minute when she scored off a give-and-go with
Mann.
Franklin Pierce added two more
strikes early in the second half to put the match away. Junior
Patricia Keeldar (Amsterdam, Holland/Ter
Leede) took a feed from freshman Meghan
Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and beat two
defenders before scoring at the 50:02 mark.
Verdoes closed out the scoring in
the 65th minute when she converted a through ball from junior
Kamille Rosenfalck (Copenhagen, Denmark/Fredriksberg
Boldklub).
Grad student Kim
Higgins (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) and freshman
Keeley Rafter (Gloucester,
Mass./Gloucester) combined for the shutout as Higgins
made one save in 77-minutes of action and Rafter made two stops in
the final 13-minutes.
Sophomore Tara McCuin registered
eight saves in goal for Saint Michael's, who wraps up its season
with a 10-9 overall record.
