Ravens Rout Dominican College,
15-0, in Home Debut
RINDGE, N.H. (September 4, 2000) -
Nine different players scored Monday as the Franklin Pierce women's
soccer team set a school record for goals in a game during a 15-0
win over Dominican College.
The Ravens, the defending NCAA
Division II champions, broke the previous school record of 13 goals
in a game, set in 1990 against Southern Vermont and tied in 1992
against Bentley.
Franklin Pierce, which was ranked
first nationally in the preseason National Soccer Coaches
Association of America poll, has now outscored its opponents 19-0
this year.
Eight of the Franklin Pierce
starters played no more than a half as the Ravens took a 9-0 lead
at halftime against Dominican (0-1). Senior forwards Tanja Pihlblad
(Lonsboda, Sweden) and Minna Mustonen (Helsinki, Finland) combined
for Franklin Pierce's first five goals in the opening 28 minutes of
the match.
Pihlblad finished with three goals,
while Mustonen had two goals and two assists.
Julia Uusmalmi (Tampere, Finland),
Christine Kirby (Florida, N.Y.), Amy Hingston (Brookline, Mass.)
and Andrea Caesar (Visby, Sweden) also scored in the first half.
Franklin Pierce Coach Jeff Bailey
emptied his bench in the second half and received some impressive
performances as the Ravens finished with advantages of 29-1 for
shots on goal and 6-0 for corner kicks for the game.
Freshman Jillian Tente (Wakefield,
R.I.) scored three goals in the second half, while freshman
Stephanie Hartenstein (Chelmsford, Mass.) had two. Freshman
midfielder Jenny Gould (Londonderry, N.H.) scored on a penalty
kick.
Senior goalkeeper Kim Higgins
(Rochester, N.H.) needed to make one save, coming in the final two
minutes of the match.
The Ravens make their debut in the
Northeast-10 Conference on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Pace.
