SMITHFIELD, R.I. (October 30,
2000)-- Senior striker Tanja Pihlblad (Lonsboda,
Sweden) scored four goals as No. 10 Franklin Pierce put an
exclamation point on its 2000 regular season with an easy 10-0 win
against Bryant monday afternoon on a cold and drizzly Surron
Field.
The Ravens, who retained their No. 10 national ranking in the NSCAA
Division II poll announced earlier Monday, held a 2-0 lead in the
first two minutes and took an 8-0 advantage into halftime. They
outshot Bryant by a 29-4 margin and saw 11 different players
register at least one point.
Pihlblad put the visitors on the board just 1:04 into the match,
and she needed just more than 11 and a half minutes to register a
hat trick. Her fourth goal, which came in the 59th minute, gave the
Ravens a 7-0 lead.
Junior midfielder Julia Uusmalmi (Tampere,
Finland) scored two goals and had an assist for the Ravens, while
senior striker Minna Mustonen (Helsinki,
Finland), the Northeast-10 Conference's leading scorer, had two
goals on the afternoon, improving her season totals to 17 goals and
10 assists for 44 points.
Junior goalkeeper Kara Shemeth (Edgartown, Mass.)
made two saves in goal for the Ravens, who finished the regular
season with a 13-2-2 overall record and took second place in the
Northeast-10 standings with an 11-1-2 conference record. Bryant
goalkeeper Christina Richard (W. Townsens, Mass.) made 11 saves on
the day as the Bulldogs' season ends with a 3-13 overall mark and a
2-12 record in the Northeast-10.
Franklin Pierce will be hosting a
first round game in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament this
Wednesday, when Saint Michael's travels to Rindge, N.H. for a 2:00
match-up. Franklin Pierce defated the Purple Knights earlier in the
year, 2-0. Mustonen and Christine Kirby (Florida, N.Y.)
each scored a goal and Kim Higgins (Rochester, N.H.)
produced a shutout in net for the Ravens.
If Franklin Pierce moves on, the Ravens will host a second rounf
game on Friday against the winner of third-seeded Merrimack and
sixth-seeded Bentley. That game will also be at 2:00 P.M.
The Northeast-10 championship game will be held at the sight of the
highest remaining seed on Sunday, November 5 at 1:00 P.M.
