Seniors Lead Ravens in 4-1 Win Over St. Michael's
WINCHENDON, Mass. (October 14, 2000) -
Seniors Karen Clarke (Brewster,
N.Y.) and Heidi Nichols
(Fremont, N.H.) combined for three goals Saturday as the
Franklin Pierce University field hockey team beat
conference-leading and No. 3 nationally ranked St. Michael's
College, 4-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference match.
St. Michael's (10-2, 7-1 NE-10), which was looking to clinch first
place in the conference, jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Jaime Andrews (Walpole, Mass.) in the eighth minute. However, FP
(8-5, 6-2 NE-10) answered back 98 seconds later on the first of
Clarke's two goals.
Clarke scored her second goal in the 33rd minute on an assist from
twin sister Kristen Clarke
(Brewster, N.Y.).
The Ravens added to their lead with second-half goals by Nichols in
the 60th minute and freshman Jestina O'Dell (Southboro, Mass.) in
the 64th minute. Karen
Clarke assisted on Nichols' team-high ninth goal, leaving
both players with 19 points for the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kasey
McClements (Ashland, Mass.) made 11 saves for the Ravens,
while Megan Scalley (Beverly, Mass.) stopped five shots for the
Purple Knights.
The win leaves the Ravens one win away from clinching the first
winning season in the program's four-year history. It also almost
assures the Ravens a spot in the upcoming six-team NE-10 tournament
and a possible home game in the first round.
