Richard Hurley

Head Coach Richard Hurley entershis seventh season at the helm of the Franklin Pierce Universitysoftball team in 2009. Hurley, the longest-tenured coach in theprogram's 20-year varsity history, is the program leader in careerwins, having accumulated 63 victories in his first six seasons withthe team.

In 2008, Hurley led the Ravens to a 9-33 record, including an 8-20mark in the competitive Northeast-10 Conference. The team's eightconference wins marked the most for the program under Hurley andtied for the second-highest conference win total in school history.One of Hurley's key recruits from last season, Emily Griffin, alsobecame the first player in program history to earn All-Conferencehonors from the NE-10 with her selection to the second team.

The head coach guided the Ravens to double-digit win totals inthree of his first four seasons with the team, including his firstseason in Rindge, in which he led the team to a 14-26-1 recorddespite injuries to key players throughout the spring.

Richard Hurley No stranger to the Northeast-10 Conference, Hurley came to theFranklin Pierce after serving as an assistant coach at AssumptionCollege, in Worcester, Mass. While at Assumption, Hurley wasresponsible for running infield and outfield practices in additionto working with athletes on batting technique.

For the past seven summers, Hurley has coached the MassachusettsLightning U-18 Junior Olympic Team. The team captured the LowellASA Invitational title in 2002, and has also won the Pony NationalQualifier (2001) and Leicester Pony Invitational (1999) under hisleadership. Hurley had prior experience with the MassachusettsLightning U-16 and U-14 programs over the previous four yearsbefore taking over the U-18’s.

A member of the Central Massachusetts Softball UmpiresAssociation, he has served as the director of the St.Bernard’s Winter Softball Clinic and attended the OlympicSoftball Team Clinic in Worcester and the Lisa Fernandez Clinic atBrown University in 1996.

Hurley graduated from Mount Wachusett Community College with anAssociate’s degree in business administration. In addition tohis duties at Franklin Pierce, Hurley is a sales representative forCreative Packaging, Inc., a company that manufactures corrugatedboxes, in Worcester, Mass.

Hurley resides in Leominster, Mass. with his wife, Mary Ellen, andhis daughter, Johanna (27).
