Maria del Carmen Sacristan Named First Women’s Flag Football Head Coach

RINDGE, N.H. – Franklin Pierce University Athletics has announced the hiring of Maria del Carmen Sacristan as the first head coach in the history of the women's flag football program.

Sacristan will lead the Ravens as Franklin Pierce prepares for its inaugural women's flag football season in 2027. She brings extensive playing and coaching experience at both the flag and tackle football levels.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Maria del Carmen Sacristan as the first head coach in the history of our women's flag football program," said Director of Athletics Matt Johnson. "She brings outstanding playing experience, a deep passion for the sport, and an enthusiasm that will be contagious throughout our campus community. We believe she will be a tremendous addition to the culture of our department and a strong leader for our student-athletes. With her knowledge of the game, competitive spirit, and commitment to developing young women, we are confident she will have an immediate impact and help build a successful program from day one."

"Playing football was life-changing for me, and it means so much to give the next generation the incredible experiences I had, along with opportunities I didn't have but always wished for," said Sacristan. "I'm so grateful for this opportunity and excited to build something special. Go Ravens!"

Sacristan has been involved in football for more than a decade as both a player and coach. She began her career with the Stallions in Mexico City, competing in flag and tackle football before serving as head coach from 2017-19. She led the program to a Coed Open League championship in 2019.

After coming to the United States, Sacristan became the first and only woman to play on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute men's varsity football team. She later played professionally for the Boston Renegades of the Women's Football Alliance, helping the team capture WFA Pro League championships in 2022 and 2023.

Sacristan also played quarterback and safety for the New Hampshire Rebellion and has competed extensively in flag football throughout New England. Her experience includes playing multiple positions on both sides of the ball, including quarterback, wide receiver, corner back and safety.

Sacristan earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating with high distinction and earning Dean's List recognition. She now brings her academic background and extensive football experience to Franklin Pierce, where she will lead the development of the University's newest varsity program and help establish the foundation for women's flag football at FPU.
