HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Ravens wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the sixth minute when Guillermo Avendaño (Luanco, Spain) connected on a header that floated over the Saint Anselm keeper and into the net. The play began with a well-placed cross from Julen Martin (Bilbao, Spain), giving Franklin Pierce the early 1–0 lead.
  • The offensive pressure continued midway through the first half. In the 22nd minute, Guillermo Rios (Asuncion, Paraguay) found space in the middle of the box and blasted a right-footed shot into the back of the net to double the advantage. Assists were credited to DJ Tucker (Hopedale, Mass.) and Martin.
  • Saint Anselm responded three minutes later, converting on a penalty kick in the 25th minute to trim the deficit to 2–1. However, the Ravens regained control just before halftime. Off a corner kick in the 44th minute, Joao Araujo (Madiera, Portugal) delivered a precise ball into the box that found the head of Stepan Fiker (Prague, Czech Republic), who buried it past the goalkeeper to push the lead back to two.
  • The second half saw chances for both sides, but Franklin Pierce goalkeeper David Skorodumov (Ashland, Mass.) stood strong to preserve the 3–1 result.

  • Franklin Pierce also had the 6–3 advantage in corner kicks.
