Ravens Pick Up First Win of the Season on Day Two of the Conference Challenge

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (11/9/24) - The Franklin Pierce women's basketball team earned their first win of the 2024-25 season. The Ravens defeated the District of Columbia in the second day of the Conference Challenge, hosted by the College of Staten Island. X lead the team

Score: FPU 72, DC 58

Records: FPU 1-1 (0-0 NE10), DC 0-2 (0-0 ECC)

Location: Sports & Recration Center, Staten Island, N.Y.

Date: Saturday, November 9, 2024

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Ravens opened strong with Janessa Gonzalez (Meridan, Conn.) scoring the first jumper but faced tough opposition as the Fire Birds responded quickly, keeping the game tight. Colette Mulderig (Scranton, Pa.) dominated in the paint for the Ravens, contributing multiple layups, that were well-assisted by teammates like Leana Heitmann (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Saga Tallroth (Stockholm, Sweden), helping the Ravens maintain pressure.

  • Kensley Benjamin kept UDC competitive with effective three-point shooting, but Franklin Pierce's strong outside shooting, including clutch three-pointers from Tallroth, Bryant, and Gonzalez, allowed them to maintain an edge. The Ravens closed out the half with a narrow lead of 42-34.

  • The second half saw more back-and-forth action as Tallroth contributed timely three-pointers and the Ravens' defense remained solid as UDC's Tania Hill would apply the pressure consistently. The Ravens would be able to secure their first win of the season with a final score of 72-58.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

  • The Ravens shot 39.1% from the field (25-64) while the Fire Birds shot 34.4% (21-61).
