Dyamond Gardner with nine points for the Ravens
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (February 1, 2014) – Sophomore
forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) dropped
in a team-high 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, but it
wasn't enough for the Franklin Pierce University
women's basketball team in dropping an 81-63 decision to Le
Moyne on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court in Syracuse,
N.Y.
The Ravens had their three-game
winning streak snapped in falling to 11-8 overall and 8-6 in the
Northeast-10. It also marked just their second loss in the last
nine contests overall. Le Moyne improved to 11-9 overall and evened
its conference mark at 7-7.
Franklin Pierce played well early
on and built a 27-22 lead 11 minutes into the game, but it was all
undone over the final nine minutes of the stanza, as the Dolphins
mounted a 30-6 run to stake themselves to a 52-33 lead at
halftime.
Le Moyne was outstanding
offensively during the surge by connecting on 9-of-11 shots taken
with five of those being three-pointers. Tessa Pucello and Ashley
Prischak each rained in a pair of triples early in the surge to
kick-start it, while Bath-Sheba McMahon aided it with seven points.
Maddy McKnight chipped in five points, including a three ball that
capped the closing rally.
Emily Greer also kicked in some
free throws during the stretch, which was part of her game-high
28-point performance, including 6-of-9 shooting and a 14-of-16
effort from the foul line. Pucello had 13 off the bench, while
McKnight finished with 11.
The Dolphins also turned it up
defensively during the stretch with four steals. Kayla Stroman
helped lead the charge, as she finished the game with 12 rebounds
and five thefts.
Le Moyne never let the Ravens
threaten in the second half as it cruised in for the victory.
Charette was Franklin
Pierce's lone double-figure scorer, as she had six points
during the opening stages of the game to help stake the Ravens to
the 27-22 advantage. Six different Ravens scored during the first
11 minutes, including seven points from senior guard
Brittany Martelle (Brookfield, Conn.) and six
points from sophomore guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge,
Mass.) on a pair of triples.
Gardner and senior Brooke
Coderre (Woonsocket, R.I.) each finished with nine points
for Franklin Pierce. Charette's point total marked the fourth
time this season she scored at least 25 points in a contest.
Both teams shot well from the field
with Le Moyne connecting at a 49-percent clip, and the Ravens
following at 48 percent. Franklin Pierce was a solid 42 percent
from beyond the arc, but the Dolphins were even better going at a
67-percent success rate.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Wednesday night when the Ravens open a three-game homestand by
playing host to Saint Michael's at 5:30 p.m. in The
Fieldhouse in Rindge.
