WORCESTER, Mass. (December 1, 2013) – The Franklin
Pierce University women's basketball team shot just 24
percent from the field, and went scoreless over a stretch of 14:50
in falling, 73-50, to Assumption on Sunday at Laska Gymnasium in
Worcester, Mass. The Ravens dropped their second straight to fall
to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds
improved to 4-3 and 1-3 in league play.
Assumption on the other hand was
strong shooting the basketball, hitting at a 49 percent clip
(28-of-57). Jamie Insel pumped in a game-high 20 points for the
Greyhounds on 9-of-13 shooting, while Tafanie Roye followed with 15
points.
Franklin Pierce was led by senior
guard Brittany Martelle (Brookfield, Conn.), who
had a team-high 12 points.
Martelle's only three-pointer
of the game at the 10:22 mark of the first half capped a 10-0 surge
by the Ravens to give them a 16-12 lead.
The game seemed like it would be a
typical back-and-forth NE-10 affair. However, the Ravens went
scoreless the rest of the half, and the first 4:28 of the second
half, while Assumption scored 30 points during that stretch to open
up a commanding 42-16 advantage with 15:32 remaining.
Insel had eight points during the
run, while Roye added seven. Johanna Impellizeri scored six of her
eight points to aid the surge.
Senior forward Caitlin
Hopkins (Holtsville, N.Y.) dropped in a jumper to end
Franklin Pierce's streak, and Martelle followed with
five-straight points moments later, but the Ravens could not jump
start a comeback as Assumption kept its lead around 18-24 points
the rest of the way in picking up the victory.
Insel had a double-double for the
game by collecting 11 rebounds, as Assumption also held a 53-32
advantage on the boards.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Wednesday night when the Ravens travel to Manchester to take on
Southern New Hampshire at 5:30 p.m.
