RINDGE,
N.H. (October 8, 2011) – The No.
2-nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer
team played to a 1-1 draw with New Haven on Saturday night at
Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens had their 10-match winning
streak snapped and moved to 10-0-1 on the season, while also moving
to 6-0-1 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers moved to 1-7-3 on the
season and 0-6-1 in league play.
Franklin Pierce got on the board
first in the second minute off an impressive individual effort from
senior midfielder Diego Tabares (Seekonk, Mass.).
Tabares started the play by intercepting a pass near the midfield
stripe, dribbled down the left side and launched a shot that beat
the UNH goalkeeper to the lower left corner of the net. It was
Tabares' team-leading sixth goal of the season and his fifth
in the past four matches. Also during that stretch he has compiled
11 points.
The game settled into a midfield
battle over the next 27 minutes before New Haven finally broke
through with a tally in the 29th minute when Joseph
D'Antonio took a pass from Clancy Purcell and headed in a
goal to knot the score at 1-1.
Again, the match settled into a
battle near the midfield stripe as neither side could muster many
quality scoring opportunities.
Franklin Pierce did pick up the
offensive intensity during the final minutes of regulation and in
both overtimes, but could not get anything past UNH keeper J.J.
Comeau. The Ravens eventually outshot the Chargers, 17-5, including
putting five shots on goal. Comeau made four saves to run his
record to 0-6-2 on the season. His counterpart, Franklin Pierce
goalie Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) made
one save to move his record to 10-0-1 on the campaign.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Tuesday when the Ravens travel to North Andover, Mass. to face
Merrimack at 7 p.m.
