MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 1, 2011) -- The No. 3
nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team used
an overtime goal from senior Diego Tabares (Seekonk,
Mass.) to pull out a 1-0 overtime win at Saint Anselm on
Saturday in Manchester, N.H. The Ravens improved to 9-0 overall and
5-0 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Anselm dipped to 4-5-2 and
1-4-1 in league play.
Tabares scored the match's lone
goal in the 96th minute off a feed from classmate Victor
Goncalves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). It marked the
second-straight match the duo teamed up for a goal as Tabares
scored the second goal off another Goncalves' pass in Tuesday's 2-0
win over Saint Rose in Sodexo Field.
For Tabares, it was his third goal of the season, which moved
him into a tie for second place on the team in that category.
Goncalves was credited with an assist on the play to add to his
team-leading point total of 11 points.
Tabares led Franklin Pierce with
four shots as both teams finished the contest with nine shots
apiece. Senior goalkeeper Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington,
Mass.) made a trio of saves to earn his fourth-consecutive
shutout victory to improve to 9-0 on the season.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday when the Ravens
travel to face Southern Connecticut State in New Haven at 7
p.m.
