RINDGE, N.H. (September 28,
2008) - Defending NCAA Division II Champion Franklin
Pierce University extended its unbeaten streak to four matches with
a 1-0 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference
men's soccer action this afternoon at Sodexo Field.
The win extends Franklin Pierce's
unbeaten streak in regular season NE-10 matches to 20 (17-0-3)
dating back to October 2006, and runs its unbeaten streak in
regular season NE-10 matches at home to 30 (27-0-3) dating back to
October 2003.
Freshman forward Viktor
Gonçalves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) netted the lone
goal and classmate Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington,
Mass./Wilmington) made four saves in goal to preserve the
victory and his third-straight shutout. Papageorgiou hasn't allowed
a goal in his last 351:47 in net dating back to the 29th
minute of a 5-1 win over The College of Saint Rose on September 16.
Freshman Viktor Goncalves scored the lone goal late in the first
half.

Sophomore goalkeeper
Brandon McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free
Academy) made nine saves for Stonehill - who was out-shot
15-7 for the match, but kept shots even at 6-6 in the second half.
The lone goal of the match came
with just over ten minutes to play in the first half as grad
student Casey Ftorek (Wolfeboro, N.H./Taft School)
took a shot from the right side at the top of the 18, which got
past McFarlane and was tapped in at the left post by
Gonçalves at the 34:45-mark. The goal is the NE-10 leading
seventh of the season for Gonçalves.
Stonehill pressed forward late in
regulation for an equalizer, forcing a pair of Papageorgiou saves
off headers with under 15-minutes to play and sophomore
Tyler Hebert (Rockland, Mass./Sacred Heart) had a
long range shot from 35-yards out skim off the top of the crossbar
in the 86th minute.
Franklin Pierce (5-4-1, 4-0-1
NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday, when it travels to Saint
Anselm College at 4 p.m. That match was originally scheduled for
Tuesday, but pushed back a day due to this afternoon's
postponement. The Ravens return home on Saturday to host Mercy
College in a non-conference battle at 7 p.m. Stonehill (2-4-1,
1-4-0 NE-10) hosts Mercy on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
